The album captured their raw sound and even included the sounds of a cocktail glass breaking and the broken shards being swept away during the song “Turtle Blues”. This was Joplin’s destiny it’s been said during the recording of the album Joplin was always the first person to enter the studio and the last person to leave. Cheap Thrills topped the US charts for eight weeks and a star was well and truly born. Their breakthrough came with the release of their second album. Janis became their singer, and the group soon signed a deal and saw their debut album released by Columbia Records in August 1967. In 1966, Joplin’s bluesy vocal style attracted the attention of the psychedelic rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company, a band that had gained some renown among the west coast hippie community. It was also during this period that Joplin’s drug intake increased, topped with heavy drinking sessions. Her name is Janis Joplin.Īround 1963, Janis left Texas for San Francisco and made some early recordings of blues standards with future Jefferson Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen. The campus newspaper The Daily Texan ran a profile of her in the issue dated July 27, 1962, headlined “She Dares To Be Different.” The article began, “She goes barefooted when she feels like it, wears Levi’s to class because they’re more comfortable, and carries her Autoharp with her everywhere she goes so that in case she gets the urge to break into song it will be handy. Joplin graduated from high school in 1960 and attended the University of Texas at Austin, though she did not complete her studies. As a teenager, she befriended a group of outcasts, one of whom had albums by African-American blues artists Bessie Smith and Leadbelly, and it was while listening to these that Joplin discovered she had an inborn talent to sing the blues. Janis Joplin was born in Port Arthur, Texas, on January 19, 1943, to Dorothy Joplin, a registrar at a business college, and her husband Seth Joplin, an engineer at Texaco. Janis was unique – she was the Queen of Psychedelic Soul. Just like there’s only one Joni Mitchell, and only one Aretha Franklin, there was only ever one Janis Joplin. He died in April 1917 of syphilitic dementia at the age of 48.On 4th Oct 1970, singer Janis Joplin was found dead at the Landmark Hotel in Hollywood after an accidental heroin overdose. Joplin was married thrice in his life to Belle Jones in 1901, to Freddie Alexander in 1905, and Lottie Stokes in 1909. Throughout his career, Joplin was credited with over 100 ragtime compositions during his lifetime, one ragtime ballet, and two operas. ![]() Joplin’s magnum opus, “Maple Leaf Rag” was officially released in 1899 and is now known as the archetypal rag. By 1897, ragtime had become a national craze. In 1897, his first rag release, “Original Rags,” was released. His visit to Texas led to the publishing of three more pieces the following year. Around this time he also went to Syracuse, New York, and Texas, where two businessmen from the Big Apple published his first two releases, ‘Please Say You Will’ and ‘A Picture of Her Face’ in 1895. There he performed as a solo act at dances and major Black clubs in the region. The following year saw Joplin moving toward Sedalia, Missouri. The event is credited with playing a part in the spread of ragtime’s popularity. ![]() ![]() The exposition was met with a footfall of over 27 million visitors. The 1893 Chicago World’s Fair saw Joplin performing with a band he played cornet and arranged their music. He often played pre-ragtime ‘jig-piano’ in red light districts. He soon learned that there was little work for Black pianists in 19th-century America – churches and brothels were his only options for a steady income. ![]() He eventually gave up his job as a railway laborer to become a traveling musician. By the time he was 16, Joplin was in a vocal quartet and gave mandolin and guitar lessons. Growing up, Joplin received most of his musical education from Julius Weiss, a music professor who was employed by a local business family. When he turned seven, he was allowed to play the piano whilst his mother cleaned. The elder Joplin often played the violin and Givens sang and played the banjo, allowing the young Joplin to get a rudimentary education in music as a child. Giles Joplin worked as a railroad laborer and Florence Givens as a cleaner. Joplin was born in Texarkana, Texas to Giles Joplin and Florence Givens as their second child of six.
